9/20 - Auditing Your Organization’s Phishing Defenses, Learn to Identify the Threat @ Las Olas Riverhouse | Fort Lauderdale | Florida | United States

ISACA South Florida Dinner Learn and Network Series – September 20th, 2017

The guest speaker at this event is Roberto Valdez of Kaufman Rossin

Topic: An IT Auditor’s approach to defending your Organization’s Network against Phishing Threats.

Phishing attacks use social engineering techniques mixed with technical tricks to fool the user and steal sensitive information and banking account credentials. Social engineering schemes are typically based on spoofed emails to lead users to visit infected websites designed to appear as legitimate ones. The websites are designed to lead customers to divulge financial data, such as account usernames, credit card numbers, passwords, and social security numbers.

The technical subterfuges are various and usually involve the use of malware specifically designed to steal credentials from victims while hiding evidence of the attack.

Phishing schemas can be more or less complicated. Many variants of the attack are described in the literature. Here are some of the most famous ones:

  • User receives deceptive email messages that appear to be sent from a legitimate source, such as a business partner, that contain an explicit request to verify account information with a web service, without which the account will be suspended.
  • Users are encouraged to visit fake websites that can be similar in appearance to legitimate sites. When a user visits the compromised website, malicious software can be downloaded automatically to his computer. Typically, the malware installed records the credentials used by the users to access to target services (e.g., banking), sending them to the command and control servers managed by the attackers.
  • User receives messages from false charities that request direct donations in cash.
  • Users of a social network platform receive messages, apparently from the platform, that contain a link leading them to a compromised website. The compromised website could download a malicious application onto the victim’s machine to steal sensible information or it could offer a web form that appears to belong to a legitimate site that request authentication data. This form of phishing is also known as social phishing

3/27 - Balancing Security Certifications and Experience, Which Path to Take? @ Axis Space | Fort Lauderdale | Florida | United States

The guest speaker at this event will be Michael R. Brown of 24BY7SECURITY, Inc. & Angela Polania with Elevate Consult.

Topic: Path to success, balancing Security  & Audit Certifications with work experience, which path to take, Which certs to obtain?

Security+, CISSP, CISA, CEH, CSX, etc.  What are these certifications?  What does it take to obtain them and keep them?  Which ones should I focus on?  And just as important, do I really need to obtain one for my career?

Whether you are an experienced infosec professional or just getting into the field, you will be confronted by a wide range of infosec certifications.  It can be daunting to figure it all out.

In this presentation, we will go over the basics of certifications: why they exist, how they are obtained from training to testing, and how they are maintained such as getting continuing education.  Yeah, once you have ‘em, you’ll need to work to keep ‘em!

We will look at the infosec certifications from the 5 main certifying bodies: CompTIA, ISC(2), ISACA, EC-Council, and SANS/GIAC.  And we will look at several related certifications that infosec professionals may also wish to pursue.  Just as important, we will take a look at which certifications are most important based on your career focus.

At the end of the presentation, attendees should have a better understanding of certifications and a good idea as to which ones they may want to pursue.

ISACA South Florida Annual General Meeting – May 10th 2018

The guest speaker at this year’s Annual General Meeting is Dr. Dave Chatterjee

Topic: Life Aboard A U.S. Nuclear Submarine: What Has That Go To Do With Cyber Security?

How does an organization earn and maintain customer trust amid growing concerns of data    safety and security? The overall goal is to help firms become and remain highly reliable.

Life aboard a nuclear submarine is rough. A recent article on the just-launched USS South Dakota describes how 135 sailors have to take turns sleeping, as there are only 94 beds. Space is at a premium on this high-tech vessel with the dining room doubling up as an operating theater, and the torpedo room becoming the exercise and sleeping area. Getting used to a life of indistinguishable night and day, working and sleeping at odd hours, learning to make your way through narrow walkways without running into others, and maintaining a quiet and peaceful environment is not easy.

It also requires great discipline and loyalty to strictly follow protocols and procedures that govern behavior during and after work hours. The service personnel operate in a culture of high-performance expectations where mistakes and failures can be catastrophic. Admiral Hyman Rickover, the father of the US Nuclear Navy, is credited with creating and sustaining such a high-reliability organization (HRO) that has an exemplary zero-failure track record over its sixty-plus year existence.

The principles at the heart of this highly successful Nuclear Navy culture are integrity, depth of knowledge, procedural compliance, forceful backup, questioning attitude, and formality in communications.
At this meeting, we will recognize those who have been instrumental in the Chapter’s success during the course of the 2017-2018 year, along with our newest members, and those who recently passed the CISA, CISM and CGEIT exams.

We will also announce the new ISACA South Florida 2018-2019 Board
